The entire polishing process can take several hours per piece and has to be carried out both before and after the gemstones are set. There are several rounds of polishing applied to each piece to ensure that both the gemstones and the surrounding metals complement each other. The first stage involves removing the marks left by the goldsmith with an appropriately sized brush. The next stage involves the extremely time consuming process of polishing with thread – a necessary step to provide adequate polishing to the inside of the setting. Although polishing is the final stage in the creation of a fine piece of jewellery, it is just as important as any of the previous stages.
