The name ‘aquamarine’ comes from the Latin ‘aqua’ for ‘water’ and ‘mare’ for ‘sea’. Aquamarine was believed to be the treasure of mermaids and is said to symbolise love and loyalty. The blue tone in aquamarine comes from the presence of iron, producing a range of blue shades, from a pale blue to a greenish-blue through to a dark blue. One of the largest crystals was unearthed in the Minas Gerais mine in Brazil in 1910, weighing 110.5 kg.
Jewellery made from aquamarine is perfect for the independent and fashionable modern woman as it portrays a contemporary yet classic look.
